Bohinj, Slovenia
Julian Alps & Soča Valley
A tandem flight here starts with a ride up: a van from the lakeside meeting point, then the Vogel cable car and a chairlift to a launch high above the valley. From there it is twenty to thirty minutes in the air, with Triglav and the Julian Alps on one side and Lake Bohinj below. A shorter flight from Vogar is reached by van and a short walk. Kumulus Paragliding is a small local team, no experience is needed, and flights go only when conditions are right.

Photo Tip

From the ground, the lakeside landing meadow at Stara Fužina is where companions get the clearest shot of the final approach. In the air, the operator's photo and video package is the reliable way to get a full set of flight images. Late spring gives the strongest contrast, with snow still on the ridges above a green valley.

Access & Parking

Detailed access info in Plan Your Visit ↑
Everything starts and ends at the meeting point at Ribčev Laz 60, which sits directly on the road with a bus stop right outside. Driving is the recommended arrival. Kumulus customers may use the partner car park at the same address for the duration of the activity, using the area behind the two buildings. From the meeting point the operator handles transport to the take-off and back.

Interesting Facts

1
Two take-offs, one landing meadow
Bohinj tandem flights use two very different launch sites. The higher one is on Vogel, reached by cable car and then the Orlove glave chairlift, while the lower one on Vogar is reached by van and a short walk. Both flights finish in the same place, the bathing meadow beside the Kramar guesthouse at Stara Fužina, which is also where anyone who prefers to watch should wait.
2
A drop of more than a kilometre
The Vogel flight covers an altitude difference of about 1,200 metres between launch and landing, which is what gives it twenty to thirty minutes in the air rather than the ten to fifteen minutes of the shorter Vogar flight, where the drop is about 500 metres. That vertical range is unusual for a lift-served launch site in Slovenia.
3
There is a ceiling above the valley
Flying above Bohinj is not unrestricted. Paragliders over the valley have a published ceiling of 2,900 metres above sea level, so pilots working thermals on a strong day have a defined upper boundary. They also watch the valley winds closely, because south-westerly and foehn conditions can produce strong gusts and a strong northerly makes flying inadvisable.
4
Landing is regulated by the national park
The whole flight takes place inside Triglav National Park, and that changes the rules for where a canopy may come down. Landing on unregistered areas of the park is prohibited and can be fined, and landing in high grass is not permitted either. Take-off and landing are allowed only at the official sites, which is why every Bohinj operator lands in the same lakeside meadow.
5
Why the thermals here are generous
Bohinj sits in a deep glacial valley enclosed by high ridges, and that shape makes the air work well for long flights. Warm air rising off the valley floor is funnelled up the slopes, so a flight sold as a twenty-minute descent can stretch considerably when conditions cooperate. That is why the operator publishes a range rather than a fixed flight time.
6
A small team rather than a large agency
Kumulus Paragliding has been flying tandem passengers since 2017 and is run by Ambrož Mikelj, who decided to build his life around paragliding after his first flight at eighteen. The team is small enough that each pilot is named individually, and one of them has more than twenty-five years of flying behind him, ten world records and several national championship titles.
7
You pay most of it after you land
Booking online takes a prepayment, and the balance is paid in person once you are back on the ground. The reason is practical: paragliding is weather dependent and a booked slot may be postponed or moved to the other take-off. Cancelling more than seventy-two hours ahead returns the prepayment in full, while cancelling inside that window does not.
8
Flying is not a summer-only season here
Kumulus flies throughout the year rather than closing for winter. June to September is the main season, with April–May and October–November as the quieter shoulder months, but the deciding factor is always the day itself: every slot is booked in advance and flown only when conditions allow.
9
The camera package is a separate decision
Photographs and video are not included in the flight price and are bought as an extra on the day. The pilot carries a camera, and you come back with roughly one hundred photos plus several videos on an SD card.
10
The ride up is part of the experience
For the Vogel flight the journey to the launch is a small trip in itself. A van collects passengers from the lakeside meeting point, the Vogel cable car climbs the mountainside, and the Orlove glave chairlift carries them the last stage toward the take-off. The cable-car and chairlift tickets are included in the Vogel flight price, and the return transfer to the meeting point is included too.
